What Does Planning Your Social Media & 60 Minute Makeover Have In Common?

Planning is the essence for any project and it is crucial that you are planning your social media marketing journey too. What does planning your social media have in common with 60 minute Makeover TV series program? Have you watched the TV series before? It’s the one that a team of designers, craftsmen and women work together to transform several areas of a home in just 1 hour. Crazy right? It is definitely possible when you have a plan in place and all in your team are working towards one End Goal.

So, let’s look at the common parts between the two:

  • Start with the WHY?
    • Sounds simple but finding the WHY should always be the root of any project. It enables an understanding of what’s to come and how you will deal with it. Why do you need to be on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and so many others? Is it because your competition is on it or is it because it’s where your current customers and prospects are hanging out?
    • Similarly in 60 minutes Makeover, a loving son or daughter wants to give something special to their parents and secretly arranged for nice surprise to take place.
  • Set Your End Goal for each social platform
    • Establishing your End Goal for each platform should be the first thing you should do. Having in mind your business objectives how does social media can be integrated into it. Working backwards from your end goal, break it down into SMART objectives using the formula Specific, Measurable, Attainable, realistic and Timely.
    • At 60 minute makeover they use a sign that says “Keep Me” for those features in the room that they want to keep and everything else can then get changed. They assess how many rooms need transforming, what is going to change, what atmosphere is required for each room to achieve a balance in the home, what colours are best? Who is doing what by when and where.
  • Know Your Audience
    • Do you know who is your audience? Have you created a “Persona” for your marketing channels. When you identify this “Persona”, you will find the best marketing message that is going to resonate with them and turn them into advocates for your brand. What are their likes? Dislikes? Behaviours? Lifestyle?
    • In the 60 minute Makeover, the designer finds out beforehand what type of person is going to live in that “space” and their likes and how they use the space that it’s going to be transformed.
  • What needs to be outsourced
    • You can’t do everything… right? Totally understand and you should focus on the tasks that only you know how to do them. Find out what you need to outsource? Who is doing what? What tools will be needed for you to manage your social media channels?
    • Equally in the 60 minute Makeover, What paint you will need? Wallpaper? What furniture is required? Can’t have a bedroom without a bed?
  • What needs to be done first
    • I would say that if you already have a presence on social media that the first thing to do is audit your social sites. Find out why you should audit your social sites and keep your business out of trouble.
    • Can’t put a brand new carpet down without having the walls painted…
  • Team & Mission are in Unison
    • Team accepts the mission of the project from day 1 and they all work together towards the End Goal.

  • How are you going to deal with “unexpected” problems
    • Like any single project, unexpected problems may occur and that is fine!! Successes should be celebrated and failures need to be looked at with an objective to overcome them and improve on them.
    • Because it is a 60 minute Makeover, it is expected that problems will happen and it is important that communication between the designer and the workforce is established to resolve those problems and move forward with the project.
  • Choose your campaigns wisely
  • Go for quality over quantity
    • When choosing your social media marketing tools, bear in mind what you want to achieve and assess if it is cost effective to use a free tool versus a paid tool. With a paid marketing tool, you will have access to more quality features and therefore saving you time and money. Look into scheduling tools, social listening tools, visual tools, management tools and analytical tools.
    • When you buy a luxurious leather sofa that is going to last you a lifetime, why would you want a cheap version that is going to get stained and ruined in no time.
  • Take a break
    • Social Media is intense and “noisy”…take a break from it all and a deep breath. Return to it when you’re ready. Don’t do it all at the same time, plan your strategies and choose by when it needs to be done and who’s going to do it.
    • At 30 minutes into the Makeover, all team have a cup of tea and relax.
  • Review what has been done
    • Review all your actions to check if you are on track…what is working…what needs changing and adjust as you go along.
    • Regular updates with the designer in 60 minutes Makeover, discuss what is happening, what is on track and which rooms still have work in progress. Are we going to finish on time? They always do 🙂 expect the unexpected picture frame that hasn’t been hung on the wall.
  • Have FUN…Go wild with it…THINK out of the box and around it 🙂
  • Rush it and it will only take longer, the job you’ve planned will never be finished and not done properly.
  • Have you reached your END GOAL?
    • When you’ve reached your End Goal, imagine the satisfaction you will get when all the pieces of the social “puzzle” are together and working in harmony. You can finally relax…put your feet up and have a glass of wine and celebrate in your social “space” that you have built together with your team.
