Do You Know Where Your Customers Are Going?

It’s all good and well having an idea of where you’d like to take your company, but that’s not the only thing you’ll need to have on your mind. It’s just as important – perhaps even more important – that you think about where your customers are going. After all, they’re the ones who are going to make or break your success. If you’re going to a place that they don’t want to go, then any success you’re currently enjoying will be in jeopardy. Below, we take a look at a few customer trends that’ll you want to incorporate into your plans.

To Customer Based Companies

The days of the company being in control are over. While many businesses have espoused an ethos of “the customer comes first” in the past, it was often just lip-service. That’s all changed now, in large part because of Amazon, who put all of their decisions through the lens of “what’s good for the customer?” If you currently have the customer experience as an afterthought, it might be time to bump it up the priorities list. There are plenty of simple ways you can improve your customer relations, just by doing things — for example, sending up follow-up emails to ensure they’re happy with their order.

In the Online World

It’s not enough to only know that your customers are using the online world, and the importance this has to businesses like yours. You need to know how your customers are using the internet; as in, how they’re consuming the information, what they like, what they don’t like, and so on. For example, videos are hot right now — indeed, in the coming years somewhere in the region of 80% of internet traffic will be video: if you don’t yet have videos as part of your marketing campaigns, now is the time to change that. Since smartphone internet usage is overtaking desktop internet usage, it’s also worthwhile working with app developers to get your own company app. In the process, you’ll be establishing a closer relationship with your customers, and become a more significant part of their life.

To Ethical Companies

That the world has problems that need to be addressed is nothing new. While governments may be slow to act, customers are more willing to take action. Many people, especially younger people, are choosing to enact change by carefully choosing which businesses they use. They want more than just the product or service a company provides; they want to know that the company cares about things other than profit. If you currently don’t think about the carbon footprint or social worthiness of what you’re doing, then now’s the time to get more active!

Back to Basics

Advertising still works, but the effectiveness of hyperbole is on the wane. Customers aren’t looking for companies to promise the world — they’re too cynical to be lured in by that these days. Instead, keep things simple, and don’t try to be anything that you’re not. The basic ingredients of your business should work just fine!
